The Many Names and Big Benefits of Faucet Aerators

The Many Names and Big Benefits of Faucet Aerators

Parcourir la page
What exactly is an aerator? What functions does it perform? And why does it have so many different names?
An aerator, also known as a bubbler, filter screen or stream straightener, is a small component attached to the end of a faucet. Its main task is to regulate the water stream, for example by mixing in air. This ensures that the stream is soft and even and reduces splashing. Additionally, aerators perform a variety of other functions - from › creating different stream patterns to saving water. Often, attention is only paid to a faucet aerator when something stops working. For example, if the water stream splashes in all directions, › hits too close to the edge of the sink or looks really unappealing and › heavily calcified.

Also popularly known as...

The term "perlator" is sometimes used incorrectly when referring to an aerator. “PERLATOR” is a registered trademark of Neoperl for a faucet aerator. Therefore, every PERLATOR is a faucet aerator, but not every faucet aerator is a PERLATOR. Aerators are known by many other names. Admittedly, this can sometimes lead to confusion. Here are just a few of the names we have come across:

How does an aerator work?

The flow of water through the aerator is regulated by an O-ring, which adjusts in response to water pressure. As the pressure changes, the O-ring expands or contracts, altering the size of the openings and maintaining a consistent flow rate.

What Else Can Faucet Aerators Do?

Faucet aerators do more than just shape the flow of water—they can also help you save water, energy, CO₂, and money. But not every aerator is designed for water savings. For example, bathtubs usually require a high flow rate to fill quickly, so a water-saving aerator wouldn't be ideal there. That’s why it’s important to choose the right aerator for each specific application.
Installing a water-saving faucet aerator is an easy, cost-effective way to conserve water every time you use your tap. For instance, switching to a 1.5 gallons-per-minute (gpm) aerator can reduce water use by up to 30% compared to a standard 2.2 gpm model. And because much of the water used in homes is heated, reducing water usage also lowers energy consumption.
Many modern faucets already include water-saving features, but you can easily › check if yours does—and estimate your potential savings—with our online › water savings calculator. We recommend a flow rate of 1.2 gpm for bathroom faucets and 1.75 gpm for kitchens.
Just like other hygiene-related products, aerators should be cleaned regularly and replaced as needed to maintain their performance.
