Prevent crossover flow in systems with unequal line pressures.
Ex: Cold and hot water inlets in mixing valve.

Protect drinking water from contamination by backflow resulting from gravity, backsiphonage or backpressure.
Ex: Hose connected kitchen spray or shower handle.

Protect sensitive equipment against possible damage or contamination resulting from a reversal of flow direction.
Ex: Water meter, pump or filter.

Allow complex systems to function properly by ensuring unidirectional flow.
Ex: Multi-zone heating system or booster pumps.

Hold water in a system or pipe after the flow has been turned off to prevent drainage or facilitate restart.
Ex: Pumping systems.

Reduce the effects of supply pressure fluctuations on pressure sensitive equipment.
Ex: Backflow preventers with intermediate atmospheric vent (prevent unwanted discharge).

Reduce the risk of backflow or leakage in case of valve failure.
Ex: Solenoid valve at the inlet of an appliance.
