Model Codes accept check valves for backflow protectionThe 2003 Universal Plumbing Code (UPC) joins the International Plumbing Code (IPC) and the National Standard Plumbing Code (NSPC) in approving the use of A112.18.3-certified check valves for backflow protection in pullout kitchen and bathroom spouts and handheld showers. In November 2002 the IAPMO Standards Council upheld appeals from the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute and Delta Faucet Company to remove a requirement from the UPC that these fittings contain a vacuum breaker. This recent action by IAPMO removes all barriers for the use of certified check valves for backflow protection for pullout spouts and handheld showers throughout the US. ANSI/ASME A112.18.3 (Performance Requirements for Backflow Protection Devices and Systems in Plumbing Fixture Fittings) is the standard that defines backflow requirements for fixture fittings and is referenced in A112.18.1 (Plumbing Fixture Fittings) and CSA B125. A112.18.3 is unique in that it is a performance-based standard requiring rigorous life testing of multiple check valve samples for mechanical wear and aging. The endurance testing of 200,000 cycles in hard water required by the standard ensures a high degree of reliability throughout the useful life of the fitting. Using certified NEOPERL® check valves greatly simplifies the faucet certification process for a manufacturer. By simply specifying the NEOPERL® check valve part number(s) used, the fitting only has to pass the normal backflow and backsiphonage tests specified in the standard to achieve certification. NEOPERL® offers a variety of check valve products (ranging in size from 3/8" to 3/4" that have successfully been tested and are in compliance with A112.18.3.
